The Smritivan Earthquake Memorial and Museum, located in Bhuj, Gujarat, is a poignant tribute to the victims of the devastating 2001 Kutch earthquake. Inaugurated on August 28, 2022, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the memorial spans 470 acres on Bhujiyo Hill and serves as a testament to resilience, regeneration, and hope .

  • Miyawaki Forest: The site features the world’s largest Miyawaki forest, with over 500,000 trees, symbolizing life and regrowth.

  • Check Dams and Reservoirs: Fifty check dams are adorned with plaques bearing the names of 12,932 earthquake victims, serving as a solemn tribute and aiding in water conservation

  • Solar Power Plant: A 1.04 Megawatt solar power plant powers the museum and memorial, promoting renewable energy and sustainability.

  • Sun Point: An open space offering stunning panoramas of the city, sunrises, and sunsets from atop Bhujiyo Dungar .

Museum Features

The museum, covering 11,500 square meters, is divided into seven thematic blocks:

  1. Rebirth: Explores the Earth’s evolution through interactive models and projections.

  2. Rediscover: Showcases Gujarat’s topography and natural disaster risks.

  3. Restore: Depicts the aftermath of the 2001 earthquake and relief efforts.

  4. Rebuild: Highlights reconstruction efforts and community resilience.

  5. Rethink: Discusses disaster preparedness and mitigation strategies.

  6. Relive: Features a 5D earthquake simulator with sound, light, and vibration effects .

  7. Renew: Serves as a memorial space for the victims of the 2001 earthquake .

Recognition

In 2024, the Smritivan Earthquake Memorial Museum received the prestigious UNESCO Prix Versailles award for its exceptional interiors, becoming the first museum in India to receive international recognition for its adherence to local culture and environmental conservation
